Entering into the cyber world can seem intimidating, costly, and overwhelming. For many, cybersecurity is still seen as a foreign realm that is dominated by young men with pallid skin and greasy hair who can hack your computer from their parents’ basement while simultaneously playing Fortnite and guzzling Red Bull. Despite this portrayal by the media, and despite that 31-year-old you know who perfectly fits this description, cybersecurity is a rapidly growing field that has room for people of varied interests, backgrounds, and personalities. This means that anyone who wants an income can and should get involved in this field. This also means that businesses can rest easy; they don’t have to hire a basement gamer to get the job done. Today a business can find people with varied interests and personalities to work in their cybersecurity division.

On the other hand, both businesses and individuals should feel the urgency of getting into this field. Cybersecurity represents a realm with a big supply and demand problem. There is a  constantly increasing demand for workers in cybersecurity, but not enough people that want to go into this field. This is a problem because, as reported in Cybercrime Magazine, “cybercrime…is predicted to cost the world $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, up from $6 trillion in 2021.” This means that cybersecurity represents an opportunity for everyone: students, businesses, etc. to jump in on because not being a part of the world of cyber can have disastrous consequences for individual businesses and the economy as a whole.

The great news is that this is the perfect time for YOU, meaning you student trying to decide on a major, and you recently graduated young adult still looking for a job, and you business looking to grow and expand, to get involved in cybersecurity. Companies like Google and Microsoft are offering new training and new ways to enter the world of cyber, which means that individuals can get the training that they need, and businesses can hire people with the skills that they need. According to Cybercrime Magazine, for the first time, “the cybersecurity worker shortage in the U.S. is expected to gradually decrease, beginning in 2022.” If you are a business, now is the time to hire a cybersecurity expert. If you are a young employee, now is the time to receive training in cyber skills.

Space may be the final frontier, but the cyberspace represents a new frontier just waiting to be explored right now by truly anyone. The good news is that you don’t have to explore alone, Sumsion Business Law has recently entered the world of cybersecurity itself and can help guide you through this journey. In partnership with a cybersecurity tech expert, we can work through a questionnaire with you to identify your weak areas in cybersecurity and how to strengthen them. We will then draft for you a WISP document, which provides you with legal protection and outlines the measures you are taking to ensure the protection of your own and customer data. Please reach out if you would like to enter this field and don’t want to do it alone; Sumsion Business Law is here to help guide you.
